| Climate change scenarios exhibit a definite warming trend (Schröter et al. 2005), and it will have an impact on crop management strategies. Increase in winter precipitation and higher temperatures favour soil borne pathogens and can lead to an increase in survival rate and to more rapid population buildup (Chakraborty et al. 2000). In recent years, one of the main reasons for declining production of summer pea in organic farming in Germany are foot and root rot pathogens (Pflughöft 2008). On the other hand, predicted increase in winter temperatures is expected to favour winter pea over summer pea varieties. | Integration of additional leguminous living mulch and cover crop species holds a great potential for reducing external inputs and improving agricultural sustainability. However, changes towards legume rich crop rotations raises concerns as many of the species of interest share important soil-borne pathogens with some important main crops such as peas, beans and cereals. The pathogenicity towards the spring pea variety Santana was determined for 67 isolates of Fusarium oxysporum, F. solani, F. avenaceum, Didymella spp., Phoma medicaginis and Phoma spp. obtained from seemingly healhty roots of Trifolium subterraneum, T. repens, Vicia villosa and V. sativa. | Eine wichtige Anpassung an den ökologischen Anbau ist eine zügige Frühentwicklung und ein Wurzelsystem, das an organische Düngung angepasst ist. Eine Halbdiallelkreuzung aus insgesamt 20 europäischen Winterweizensorten wurde 2001 hergestellt und insgesamt drei Subpopulationen aus neun Hochertragseltern (CY), eine mit 12 Backqualitätseltern (CQ) und eine aus allen Eltern (CYQ) zusammengestellt. Seit der F5 wird Saatgut unter konventionellen und ökologischen Anbaubedingungen in jeweils zwei parallelen Populationen getrennt nachgebaut. Saat jeder Generation wird bei -20o C aufbewahrt. | TThree winter wheat composite cross (CC) populations were created in 2001 in the UK consisting either of 20 modern wheat parents (called A population), a subset of 12 high quality parents (Q), or a subset of 9 high yielding parents (Y). Seed of the F4 was transferred to the University of Kassel in 2005 and the populations were grown since then under organic and conventional conditions in well separated large (>100 m2) plots in two parallel sets (12 populations total) without conscious selection applied. | Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die Auswirkungen von Sortenmischungen bei unterschiedlicher Nährstoffversorgung auf Backqualität, Ertrag und Krankheitsbefall im Ökologischen Landbau zu überprüfen. Die Ergebnisse der Versuche legen nahe, daß Interaktionen zwischen Standortbedingungen, Jahr und Sorte sehr groß sind aber insgesamt die Mischungen die Backqualität nicht beeinträchtigen. Die Datenbasis ist aber für die Formulierung von Empfehlungen nicht breit genug. Um den Einfluß von Standortfaktoren und Mischungen auf Krankheitsbefall, v.a. Fusariosen, Backqualität und Mykotoxin-belastung zu quantifizieren wurden für 2002/2003 Praxisversuche an 12 Standorten mit Reinbeständen und Mischungen angelegt. |

| Foot rot is an important limiting factor in pea production in Germany (Pflughöft, 2008). The disease is caused by a pathogen complex consisting of Ascochyta complex pathogens (Mycospharella pinodes, Phoma medicaginis and Ascochyta pisi) and Fusarium spp. However, little is known about the specificity of single pathogens of the complex and their impact on plant performance. | There is virtually no information available on the relationship between the reaction of tomatoes to Phytophthora infestans on leaves and fruits. Late blight and brown rot of tomatoes were assessed in outdoor conditions in 2005 on 15 tomato varieties and in 2006 for 41 varieties. Leaf disease expressed as area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) and the proportion of healthy fruit of the total fruit were used as meas-ures. | Reduced tillage combined with about 10cm of fresh mulch of a mixture of green peas and rye was compared to a system with conventional tillage with a plow for its effects on disease development of Phytophthora infestans. Within tillage treatments the precrops for potatoes were weedy fallow, vetch (Vicia sativa), or a mixture of oilseed radish and black oats with or without compost application. The Area Under the Disease Progress Curve in the minimum tillage and mulched plots was on average 881 while in the plowed plots it was 1336, a highly significant difference. Yield data are currently being analyzed and will be presented. |

| Plant parasitic nematodes (PPN) can be highly damaging towards plants managed organically. In particular, broad host range PPN (Pratylenchus spp., Meloidogyne spp.) increase under long crop rotations and high weed pressure. PPN populations have been monitored since the beginning of an EU-project about minimum tillage, cover crops. living mulches, and compost application in organic farming in 2012. In the first two years after set up of the experiment, a slight increase of PPN in the minimum tillage treatment was found. However, compost as well as cover crops and living mulches did not change PPN populations so far. |
