Šišić, Adnan; Bacanovic, Jelena; Bruns, Christian; Finckh, Maria R..
Climate change scenarios exhibit a definite warming trend (Schröter et al. 2005), and it will have an impact on crop management strategies. Increase in winter precipitation and higher temperatures favour soil borne pathogens and can lead to an increase in survival rate and to more rapid population buildup (Chakraborty et al. 2000). In recent years, one of the main reasons for declining production of summer pea in organic farming in Germany are foot and root rot pathogens (Pflughöft 2008). On the other hand, predicted increase in winter temperatures is expected to favour winter pea over summer pea varieties. The hope is also, that winter peas are less susceptible to root rot as summer peas. However, few data are available. The present study was carried out...

Agronomic performance of two generations (F12 and F13) of thirteen winter wheat composite cross wheat populations with differing cultivation histories in 2014/15. Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Brumlop, Sarah; Heinrich, Sven; Boening, Andreas; Elsner, Maren; Finckh, Maria R.; Lammerts van Bueren, E.T.; Nuijten, E.; Messmer, Monika; Baresel, Jörg Peter; Goldringer, I.; Péter, Mikó; Megyeri, Maria; Borgen, Anders; Rasmussen, Søren K.; Pearce, Bruce; Wolfe, Martin.
As environmental and agronomic conditions are heterogeneous between and within locations, diversity within varieties or crop populations should increase adaptability to the changing and variable range of growing environments. The additional pressure of plant genetic diversity loss, has driven novel breeding approaches such as Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) and other genotype mixtures, thereby increasing both intra- and inter-varietal diversity and ensuring a “wider adaptation” capacity for crop varieties (Döring et al., 2011). A winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) CCP was created by intercrossing 20 varieties in 2001, through collaboration with the Elm Farm Research Centre and the John Innes Institute. In 2005, a seed batch of the F4 was equally...

An online toolbox for cover crops and living mulches Organic Eprints
Crossland, Mary; Fradgley, Nick; Creissen, Henry; Howlett, Sally; Baresel, Jörg Peter; Finckh, Maria R.; Girling, Robbie.
Cover crops and living mulches form an integral component of conservation agriculture promoting soil health and minimising external inputs. The OSCAR Project (Optimising Subsidiary Crop Applications in Rotation) aims to improve practices of conservation agriculture in farming systems across Europe. The principal output of the project is to develop a toolbox to make technical and scientific information publically available to farmers, researchers, and other stakeholders. The continually evolving toolbox is currently available online at www.covercrops.eu and will consist of three facets (1) An interactive user-fed wiki providing information on subsidiary crops species and machinery use with links to published literature. (2) A searchable database on...

Šišić, Adnan; Bacanovic, Jelena; Bruns, Christian; Finckh, Maria R..
Integration of additional leguminous living mulch and cover crop species holds a great potential for reducing external inputs and improving agricultural sustainability. However, changes towards legume rich crop rotations raises concerns as many of the species of interest share important soil-borne pathogens with some important main crops such as peas, beans and cereals. The pathogenicity towards the spring pea variety Santana was determined for 67 isolates of Fusarium oxysporum, F. solani, F. avenaceum, Didymella spp., Phoma medicaginis and Phoma spp. obtained from seemingly healhty roots of Trifolium subterraneum, T. repens, Vicia villosa and V. sativa. Only one isolate of F. solani and two isolates of Phoma spp. were nonpathogenic. F. avenaceum isolates...

Anpassung und Eignung von Composite Cross Winterweizen- Populationen und anderen Phänotypen auf unterschiedliche N-Versorgungsniveaus Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Lanvers, J.; Wersebeckmann, V.; Purwien, T.; Heinrich, Sven; Finckh, Maria R..
Evolutionary breeding through the introduction of composite cross populations (CCPs)encourages intra-specific diversity and increases diversity in the agricultural landscape. Increased genetic diversity in crops may help to buffer both biotic and abiotic stresses and will play an increasingly important role in unpredictable climatic conditions become more unpredictable (Østergård et al. 2009). A number of CC winter wheat populations, commercial varieties and CCP line selections were tested at the University of Kassel, under differing N input levels in order to test past adaptation and suitability to differing fertilisation levels. The CCPs have been managed since 2005 under both organic and conventional conditions without conscious selection. Genetically...

Finckh, Maria R.; Baresel, Jörg Peter; Weedon, Odette D.; Vijaya Bhaskar, A.V..

Döring, Thomas F.; Heimbach, Udo; Thieme, Thomas; Finckh, Maria R.; Saucke, Helmut.

Brumlop, Sarah; Finckh, Maria R..
TThree winter wheat composite cross (CC) populations were created in 2001 in the UK consisting either of 20 modern wheat parents (called A population), a subset of 12 high quality parents (Q), or a subset of 9 high yielding parents (Y). Seed of the F4 was transferred to the University of Kassel in 2005 and the populations were grown since then under organic and conventional conditions in well separated large (>100 m2) plots in two parallel sets (12 populations total) without conscious selection applied. In the conventional system fungicides and insecticides were not applied to expose the populations to natural pest and disease pressure. In addition, since the F8 two A populations have been maintained as broadcast sown populations without mechanical weed...

Auswirkungen der Sortenmischungsstrategie auf Backqualität,Ertrag und Krankheitsbefall im Winterweizen Organic Eprints
Finckh, Maria R.; Schulze-Schilddorf, Georg; Pawelzik, Elke.

Bacanovic, Jelena; Šišić, Adnan; Bruns, Christian; Finckh, Maria R..
Foot rot is an important limiting factor in pea production in Germany (Pflughöft, 2008). The disease is caused by a pathogen complex consisting of Ascochyta complex pathogens (Mycospharella pinodes, Phoma medicaginis and Ascochyta pisi) and Fusarium spp. However, little is known about the specificity of single pathogens of the complex and their impact on plant performance. In order to address this problem pot experiments with five isolates each of Fusarium solani f.sp pisi, Fusarium avenaceum and Mycosphaerella pinodes were carried out in controlled conditions. Three weeks after sowing and inoculation disease symptoms were assessed and plant growth parameters measured. All pathogens caused root discoloration and development of disease symptoms on pea...

Beziehung von Blatt- und Fruchtbefall mit Braunfäule bei Freilandtomaten Organic Eprints
Butz, Andreas F.; Finckh, Maria R..
There is virtually no information available on the relationship between the reaction of tomatoes to Phytophthora infestans on leaves and fruits. Late blight and brown rot of tomatoes were assessed in outdoor conditions in 2005 on 15 tomato varieties and in 2006 for 41 varieties. Leaf disease expressed as area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) and the proportion of healthy fruit of the total fruit were used as meas-ures. In 2005, the two varieties that were most susceptible to leaf blight produced the least healthy fruit while the most resistant variety produced the highest proportion of healthy fruit. However, for the varieties with more intermediate reactions to leaf blight there was great variation in the proportion of healthy fruit with an...

Concepts of plant health – reviewing and challenging the foundations of plant protection Organic Eprints
Döring, Thomas; Pautasso, Marco; Finckh, Maria R.; Wolfe, Martin.
Plant health is a frequently used but ill-defined term. However, there is an extensive literature on general health definitions and health criteria in human medicine. Taking up ideas from these philosophical debates, concepts of plant health are reviewed and a framework developed to locate these concepts according to their position in several philosophical controversies. In particular, (i) the role of values in defining plant health in a naturalist versus a normativist approach; (ii) negative and positive definitions of plant health; (iii) reductionist versus holistic perspectives; (iv) the focus on functionality versus resilience, i.e. the ability of the plant to perform under stress with or without human interference; (v) materialist versus vitalist...

Das Ertragsniveau von Composite Cross Winterweizenpopulationen mit unterschiedlichen Managementhistorien in zwei Bodenbearbeitungssystemen Organic Eprints
Schmidt, Jan Henrik; Weedon, Odette D.; Heinrich, Sven; Finckh, Maria R..

Finckh, Maria R.; Bacanovic, Jelena; Junge, Stephan; Wedemeyer, Rainer; Schmidt, Jan Henrik; Hallmann, Johannes; Baresel, Jörg Peter.

Hohls, Charlotte; Junge, Stephan; Schmidt, Jan-Henrik; Bruns, Christian; Finckh, Maria R..
Reduced tillage combined with about 10cm of fresh mulch of a mixture of green peas and rye was compared to a system with conventional tillage with a plow for its effects on disease development of Phytophthora infestans. Within tillage treatments the precrops for potatoes were weedy fallow, vetch (Vicia sativa), or a mixture of oilseed radish and black oats with or without compost application. The Area Under the Disease Progress Curve in the minimum tillage and mulched plots was on average 881 while in the plowed plots it was 1336, a highly significant difference. Yield data are currently being analyzed and will be presented.

Der Einfluss von Minimalbodenbearbeitung, Zwischenfrüchten und Kompostdüngung auf pflanzenparasitäre Nematoden im Ökolandbau Organic Eprints
Schmidt, Jan-Henrik; Bleher, Katharina; Hallmann, Dr. Johannes; Finckh, Maria R..
Plant parasitic nematodes (PPN) can be highly damaging towards plants managed organically. In particular, broad host range PPN (Pratylenchus spp., Meloidogyne spp.) increase under long crop rotations and high weed pressure. PPN populations have been monitored since the beginning of an EU-project about minimum tillage, cover crops. living mulches, and compost application in organic farming in 2012. In the first two years after set up of the experiment, a slight increase of PPN in the minimum tillage treatment was found. However, compost as well as cover crops and living mulches did not change PPN populations so far.

Schmidt, Jan Henrik; Junge, Stephan; Finckh, Maria R..
Conservation agriculture is one answer to counteract problems that are arising with climate change and soil degradation since the period of agricultural intensification. The main objectives of conservation agriculture are reduction of tillage intensity and a permanent soil cover by cash and cover crops. However, increased weed infestations are frequently reported in minimum tillage systems, particularly under organic management, resulting in increased weed seed banks. In two field experiments introduced in 2010 and 2011 and starting with two years grass-clover followed by winter wheat and potatoes, we evaluated the effect of chisel ploughing with mulch application to potatoes and different cover crops after winter wheat on the weed seed bank....
